Overview of Nokia C6-00 GSM/UMTS smartphone

Overview of Nokia C6-00 GSM/UMTS smartphone

Nokia is far inferior to Samsung in the touch phone market, the company entered it late, and the flagship Nokia N97 did not live up to expectations due to problems in the software. Nokia is looking for ways to improve the situation, and one of these ways is to establish itself in a market segment where there are no other players or their shares are not very large. For Europe, QWERTY phones were chosen as such a segment, the company has already shown a whole bunch of them, and will launch a dozen more models during the year. The feeling that all forces are thrown into this market segment, and the company is trying to become number one in it. And she will surely succeed, because behind her shoulders there are Nokia E71, Nokia E72, Nokia E63. These are models that are good, popular and form a positive perception of the Nokia brand. On the other hand, an attempt to saturate the market with QWERTY solutions looks far-fetched in many respects, as the experience of other companies, and Nokia itself, shows, this market niche is extremely narrow. As a load, you can sell a QWERTY keyboard in a flagship device, for example, in Nokia N97, Nokia N97 Mini. But in the middle price segment, such a keyboard is not considered a big plus, there are much fewer people choosing it. Let's remember very modest sales of two similar models – Nokia E75, Nokia 5730 XpressMusic. They never became noticeable on the market, just an assortment offer. Cause? The lack of a great need for a QWERTY keyboard, the presence of competing solutions without it in the line from Nokia. And cheaper, too.

In 2010, the company makes exactly the same mistake and tries to cross a snake with a hedgehog, to launch a combination of a well-known model on the market with the addition of a QWERTY keyboard. Will such a move be successful? I bet no. And the reason for this is that the keyboard itself means nothing without the accompanying features of the phone.

Who was the Nokia C6 designed for? For young people who actively communicate and need a keyboard. Remember offhand, what youth models does the company have yet? Nokia X6 immediately comes to mind, which has the same serial number, musical model (we are talking about the 16 GB version, the one without the “Together with Music” service). And here the question arises: why, besides the keyboard, is the C6 better than the older model? I don’t have an answer to this question, because apart from the added widget mode, both models are the same. But the materials used in the X6 are somewhat better, which, however, does not guarantee the build quality and related things, as I was convinced by my own example. The price difference is huge, and it's in favor of the C6, so maybe that's the whole point? But this model will appear in retail at the same price as Nokia 5800, which would seem to make the choice obvious. However, the popularity of the Nokia 5800 is already on the wane, there are several models in the Nokia line that replace it, and an attempt to extend the life cycle of this model is therefore doomed to failure. Unfortunately, the positioning of Nokia C6 for young people is very artificial, it does not reflect the realities of the market. This is more the desire of the manufacturer than a given. And, based on this, we can say that the model will become a niche, it will not be widely demanded.

The first month of sales showed that the above is fully consistent with reality. The model does not sell very well, it does not have a clear positioning. In stores, they try to offer it as a cheap version of Nokia N97, but the mention of this model causes rather a negative reaction, which plays a bad joke with Nokia C6.

Design, dimensions, controls

The body material, as before, is plastic, the assembly is not bad. In hands, when squeezed, the phone creaks, but everything is within acceptable limits. Unlike Nokia 5800, the internal mounts have been changed, now the body is solid, none of the corners come off, the mounts themselves are quite reliable.

Unfortunately, the battery cover is attached with one latch, and there is some play. You can deal with it very simply: a piece of adhesive tape on the back side or foam rubber. In a word, the skillful hands circle, but this is https://tonaton.ug/c_management-jobs perhaps the biggest drawback associated with the assembly. In some models, the protective “glass” is still incorrectly installed, it has a gap near the call send keys, but this is a manufacturing defect, it is found in a small number of devices.

The model is available in two colors – black and white. This once again emphasizes that the company is not expecting large, conspicuous sales. Otherwise, the number of color solutions would be more.

The size of the phone is 113.4x53x16.8 mm, weight – 150 grams (for the same Nokia 5230 – 111×51.7×15.5 mm, weight – 113 grams). The size is typical, but the weight has grown significantly, the device is perceived as a weighty bar.

On the right side are a paired volume key, a screen and keyboard lock slider (you can lock them automatically), and a camera button. The slider is large, unlike the Nokia 5800 it does not warp, it works fine.

There is a memory card slot on the left side.

At the top end there is a standard 3.5 mm audio jack, and behind a plastic plug there is a microUSB connector. Unlike Nokia 5800, there are no two loudspeakers, it has only one in the upper part on the left side. The absence of a second speaker adversely affects the quality of music playback at maximum volume. The device begins to noticeably wheeze, it cannot be called a crunch or something too serious, but in a quiet room, music distortions are clearly audible (tested on songs from the OVI store).

A 2 mm charger connector was placed on the bottom end. It has a bezel that glows when charging. If the phone is running low, the bezel starts flashing.

The phone has a built-in proximity sensor, it blocks the screen when you bring it to your face.

Display

The screen is identical to that of the Nokia 5800. It is covered with a plastic protective surface, slightly recessed into the body, and can be operated both by hand and with a pick. At your discretion. The screen is excellent in its characteristics, picture quality, diagonal, resolution. Let me remind you that the diagonal is 3.2 inches, the aspect ratio is 16:9, the resolution is 640×360 pixels (39×69 mm). The display displays up to 16 million colors, the picture is juicy, bright, eye-catching.

The screen automatically rotates depending on the position of the body. It takes one second or less to turn around. The display is slightly recessed into the case, along the edges there are sides. When scrolling to the right, the finger may touch the side, someone will not like it, but in principle it does not cause discomfort.

In the sun, the screen remains readable, there are no problems. At the same time, in direct sunlight, it can go blind. Up to 14 lines of text, 3 service lines fit on the screen. The display is ideal for viewing videos, photos, large lists.

Keyboard

For my taste, the QWERTY keyboard of this phone takes some getting used to. Since it has gaps on the sides, the keys are not very convenient. The buttons themselves have done more than on the Nokia N97 or Nokia N97 Mini, they have a move, they are more pleasant to use. For the Russian layout, the layout of the keys in 4 rows is almost ideal. I compared the impressions of this device and Nokia N97 Mini during the week, and in the end I admitted that they are equivalent, although the C6 wins in terms of convenience.

The backlight is white, it is uniform. Some users note the backlash of the keyboard in the upper right corner, I do not have it. I checked it on other devices, I also did not notice any problems.

Battery

The phone uses a BL-4J lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 1200 mAh (the maximum battery capacity in Nokia products in this segment). According to the manufacturer, the phone can work up to 7 hours of talk time, up to 400 hours of standby time. Music playback time – up to 30 hours.

The operating time of the device is on average about 2 days in the conditions of Moscow cellular networks. At the same time, you can talk for up to an hour and a half, take a couple of dozen pictures, record a couple of minutes of video and listen to radio or music for up to an hour. The time to fully charge the battery is about an hour and thirty minutes.

Here is the maximum operating time in various modes:

 • GPS navigation – 4-4.5 hours
 • Video playback – 3 hours 20 minutes (H.264 hands-free)
 • WEB surfing (EDGE connection) – 4 hours
 • Listening to music with headphones – 32 hours
 • Radio – 26.5 hours
 • Games – 5 hours

Memory

The amount of RAM in the phone is 128 MB, after downloading, the device has free from 45 to 55 MB of memory. Also, the user has access to about 190 MB of memory in the device itself to save their data. A 2GB memory card is included https://cars45.com.gh/dirXZGnbIKOZvU3ubQ4HH3PL, which should be enough for most users. We tested the 32 GB card, the phone recognizes it without any problems. Hot-swappable memory cards are supported.

Unfortunately, the amount of RAM here is half as much compared to the current generation of Symbian^3 devices. Savings result in the fact that the device is unstable with the browser, which often crashes. Installing Opera Mini is not a panacea, since the amount of available RAM becomes 5-6 MB in the most neglected cases. Unfortunately, the browser update for the S60, which will appear at the end of the year, is not optimized for devices with 128 MB of memory, it is designed for new models. Therefore, it is impossible to say that something will change in this aspect.

USB, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi

USB. In the USB settings, you can select one of 4 operating modes:

 • Data Transfer (Mass Storage USB) – both the phone's memory and the memory card are visible, no drivers are required, the OS itself recognizes the phone.
 • PC Suite – work with Nokia PC Suite, access all functions of the device, backup all information, and so on.
 • Image Transfer – transfer photos.
 • Media Transfer – media file transfer (MTP).

The transfer rate is about 5 Mbps. The phone does not charge when the USB cable is connected.

Bluetooth. The Bluetooth version is 2.0 with EDR support. The machine supports the following profiles:

 • Dial Up Networking Profile (Gateway)
 • Object Push Profile (Server and Client)
 • File Transfer Profile (Server)
 • Hands Free Profile (Audio Gateway)
 • Headset Profile (Audio Gateway)
 • Basic Imaging Profile (Image Push Responder and Initiator)
 • Remote SIM Access Profile (Server)
 • Device Identification Profile
 • Phone Book Access Profile (Server)
 • Stereo Audio Streaming:
 • Generic Audio/Video Distribution Profile
 • Audio/Video Remote Control Profile (A/V Remote Control Target)
 • Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (Audio Source)

Bluetooth transfer speed is 100Kb/s on average. We have tested stereo sound transfer to a headset such as Sony Ericsson DS970, composition control, rewind, skip work without problems, at the same time, the name of the current song is not displayed on the screen.

Wi-Fi. Supported network search wizard, 802.11 b / g, everything works like clockwork.

Musical Features

Typical player from Nokia, there is no remote control for the phone, and the headphones are very budget. This is a big minus for a musical device, they tried to save on everything. For those who plan to use their headphones, which I think are the majority, this is not a problem.

List of supported formats: AAC, AAC+, eAAC, eAAC+, MP3, MP4, M4A, WMA, Mobile XMF, SP-MIDI, AMR (NB-AMR), MIDI Tones (poly 64), RealAudio 7,8,10 , True tones (WB-AMR), WAV. Various bitrates are supported for mp3 files, including VBR. DRM-protected files (Janus DRM) may be used when synchronizing with Windows Media Player 11 and later.

The song title and author are displayed on the screen, as are the controls. Rewind progressive.

Equalizers. The sound quality also changes noticeably when changing equalizers. Each equalizer is 8-band, there are 6 pre-installed, each can be edited to your liking, except for the default sound. Here is a list of equalizers: Bass Booster, Classical, Jazz, Pop, Rock. In the sound settings, you can also select the channel balance, stereo extension (StereoWidening), plus Loudness.

The unit has a random playback function, as well as repeating all songs or a selected one. In standby mode, the screen displays information about the file being played.

In the music menu, there is a sorting of the list of songs by all songs, playlists (there are automatic – recently added, never played, etc.), artists, albums, genres and composers. The music library (read, the list of files) is automatically updated when synchronizing with a PC using Nokia PC Suite, but if you insert a card with recorded compositions, this does not happen. An interesting option is to view general information about the music library.

Podcasting – Podcasts are an integral part of the music player, previously it was a separate application. You can access podcasts from the player's menu, or you can download the application separately, in the second case you have access to the library, Nokia's podcast catalog, searching for them, setting up synchronization, and so on. Podcasts you subscribe to can be automatically downloaded, depending on how you download podcasts (in your home network or only through a specific access point). There are filters for accessing podcasts, in general, the application is convenient and very useful.

The flash is LED, single-section, it works well at a distance of one to two meters (the manufacturer claims up to 3 meters).

Lens specifications are as follows:

 • 20x digital zoom
 • Focus – 5.45mm
 • f/2.4mm
 • Focal length – from 10 centimeters to infinity
 • Macro mode – 10 centimeters to 50 centimeters
 • Scenes – automatic, user defined, close-up, portrait, landscape, sport, night
 • Geotagging – option to disable

The maximum resolution is Print 5M – large, these are 2592×1944 pixels. At the same time, the average size of a snapshot ranges from 700 KB to 2 MB. Other permissions are also available to the user:

 • Print 2 M – Medium (1600×1200 dots)
 • MMS 0.3 M – Small (640×480 pixels)

The time to save a picture in any of the resolutions is about the same, it is about 3-4 seconds if you set the image review after shooting. Or 1-2 seconds, if you are ready to shoot immediately further (in the second case, the pictures are recorded from the buffer, fortunately, the burst mode is immediately implemented).

Different color modes. Considering that such effects can be applied to any picture in a conventional graphic editor and on the device itself after shooting, you should not use them initially. There are 4 effects in total – Sepia, Black&White, Vivid, Negative.

Exposure adjustment. Adjustment step – 0.33, the function will be useful when shooting objects with a predominance of light or black.

White balance. In automatic mode, the camera works fine, but it is also possible to set Sunny, Cloudy, Incandescent, Fluorescent.

Sample camera shots:

Video recording. When recording a video, the number of settings is much less than in the photo mode. There is a software image stabilizer. White balance – automatic, sun, cloudy, Incandescent, Fluorescent. As effects, you can use Sepia, Black&White, Negative. Shooting mode – only automatic and night. The maximum resolution is 640×480 pixels, while the format is mpeg4, it is possible to turn off sound recording (there is no encoding quality adjustment, always 30 frames per second). The total recording time is limited only by free space. At the maximum resolution, the digital zoom is x4, with QCIF it is already x8 (here the recording format is 3GP).

Impressions

The device has no problems with the quality of communication, everything is fine. The ringer volume is high, it can be heard in different conditions. Compared to the Nokia 5530/5800, the phone sounds a bit quieter, and the loudspeaker is not so clear at maximum volume. The vibrating alert is good, it is felt in almost all situations.

In Russia, the price for the model in June-July is about 11,500-12,000 rubles (in Europe – 220 euros), which is comparable to the current cost of the Nokia 5800. By that time, the progenitor of all touchscreen phones from Nokia will become somewhat cheaper. In many ways, the C6 model can be perceived as an analogue of the 5800, but with a keyboard. In fact, rather, this is an X6 model with a simplified screen (not glass, not a volumetric sensor), but with added widgets for the standby mode. I was looking forward to the widgets being fixed, not working like in the previous two models, but, unfortunately, exactly the same problems were observed here (scheduled reboots, widget freezes). This already looks like a chronic disease for Nokia widgets.

The question remains open for me: who needs this device? There is no big army of fans of QWERTY-keyboards in the world, especially in Russia. Therefore, I think the model will go unnoticed, it will be actively sold for a couple of months, then it will rise in sales and smoothly leave the stage. Exactly the same scenario that happened for the Nokia E75/5730. In some ways, the fate of these devices is similar.

Do you like it or don't like it? The answer is more no than yes. A very incomprehensible cross between a grass snake and a hedgehog. The use of high-quality plastic, like on the Nokia N97, led to an increase in weight, which reduced the ergonomics of the device. A little, but reduced.

Over a couple of months of sales, Nokia C6 did not show any special achievements, the model is in very moderate demand, oddly enough, young people buy it. Exactly the same customers used to choose Nokia E75/5730 (say, not the same people, but their lifestyle and social status are the same). Unfortunately, the artificial expansion of the model range led to the fact that the model came out not very clear to the buyer. For those who are looking for a QWERTY solution with maximum functionality, it is inexpensive and does not do much. But for those who bought this device, it turns into a kind of constructor, because young people love to experiment.

I have no particular complaints about this phone, the problem of backlash can be solved by improvised means, but there is no way to avoid the lack of RAM that affects the operation of the browser and widgets. While working in other applications, I had no particular problems, reboots were observed, but did not occur too often and were not annoying. When updating over the air to firmware 11.0.029, my headset stopped working. Turning off the device, rebooting it did not lead to anything. The next morning, the headset miraculously worked itself. Judging by the forums, this was observed by other people, apparently, this is somehow connected with this update.

The maximum resolution is 640×480 pixels, while the format is mpeg4, it is possible to turn off sound recording (there is no encoding quality adjustment, always 30 frames per second). The total recording time is limited only by free space. At the maximum resolution, the digital zoom is x4, with QCIF it is already x8 (here the recording format is 3GP).

Impressions

The device has no problems with the quality of communication, everything is fine. The volume of the call is high, it can be heard in different conditions.

In the fourth quarter, the Nokia C6-01 model will appear on the market, in which the plastic of the back cover was replaced with metal, the camera was made 8-megapixel and the flash was strengthened (it has two sections). The cost of the model will be 279 euros against 220 for the C6-00. Given the large amount of RAM, the new OS and different speed, this device outperforms the C6-00 in everything. Apart from the QWERTY keyboard, of course. Therefore, Nokia C6-00 remains a thing in itself, in some ways – a cheap analogue of Nokia N97 Mini. But as sales show, few choose this device, it remains a niche solution.

And, based on this, we can say that the model will become a niche, will not be widely demanded.

Unlike the Nokia 5800, the internal mounts have been changed, now the body is solid, none of the corners come off, the mounts themselves are quite reliable.

Unfortunately, the battery cover is attached with one latch, and there is some play. You can deal with it very simply: a piece of adhesive tape on the back side or foam rubber. In a word, the "Skillful Hands" circle, but this is perhaps the biggest drawback associated with the assembly.

I compared the impressions of this device and Nokia N97 Mini during the week, and finally admitted that they are equivalent, although the C6 wins in terms of convenience.

Bluetooth data transfer rate is 100 Kb/s on average.

Program features

This handset is a typical representative of the S60 fifth edition, just like Nokia N97, there are widgets that are displayed on the screen in standby mode, this is the biggest difference from the same X6. The rest of the model is typical and has no pluses or minuses. An overview of the standard functionality can be found in a separate article.

GPS navigation

The third version of the maps is used, a separate description of the program can be found here.

The maximum resolution is Print 5M – large, which is 2592×1944 pixels. At the same time, the average size of a snapshot is from 700 KB to 2 MB.

We give the maximum operating time in various modes:

 • GPS navigation – 4-4.5 hours
 • Video playback – 3 hours 20 minutes (H.264 hands-free)
 • WEB surfing (EDGE connection) – 4 hours
 • Listening to music with headphones – 32 hours
 • Radio – 26.5 hours
 • Games – 5 hours

Memory

The amount of RAM in the phone is 128 MB, after downloading the device has free from 45 to 55 MB of memory. Also, the user has access to about 190 MB of memory in the device itself to save their data. A 2 GB memory card is included in the kit https://cars45.com.gh/dirXZGnbIKOZvU3ubQ4HH3PL, this will be enough for most users. We tested the operation of the 32 GB card, the phone recognizes it without any problems.

 • PC Suite – work with Nokia PC Suite, access all the functions of the device, backup all information, and so on.
 • Image Transfer – transfer photos.
 • Media Transfer – media file transfer (MTP).

The transfer rate is about 5 Mbps. The phone does not charge when the USB cable is connected.

Bluetooth. The Bluetooth version is 2.0 with EDR support. The machine supports the following profiles:

 • Dial Up Networking Profile (Gateway)
 • Object Push Profile (Server and Client)
 • File Transfer Profile (Server)
 • Hands Free Profile (Audio Gateway)
 • Headset Profile (Audio Gateway)
 • Basic Imaging Profile (Image Push Responder and Initiator)
 • Remote SIM Access Profile (Server)
 • Device Identification Profile
 • Phone Book Access Profile (Server)
 • Stereo Audio Streaming:
 • Generic Audio/Video Distribution Profile
 • Audio/Video Remote Control Profile (A/V Remote Control Target)
 • Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (Audio Source)

Bluetooth data transfer rate is 100 Kb/s on average.

Music store – access to Nokia Music Store, you can buy songs, albums, download them to your device.

FM-radio – a regular radio, at the first start it prompts you to select a region, depending on this, one or another FM band will be used. There is support for RDS, automatic tuning to the station, when playing the frequency of the station in the form of an animated splash screen is shown on the screen. Very nice. Nothing special can be said about the radio.

Record video.
